Hear me out. I may be nuts.

Took a trip to California in Jan. And noticed an oily substance splattered on my outer Left front and rear tire sidewalls. Only the outer ones.

I knocked it up to having run something over as a lot of construction was crossed. Figured road gunk.

car was all cleaned when we got home and I promptly forgot about it.

A couple weeks later, it showed up again. So I showed it to a couple car guys and they were stumped. This time, it was only the left front.

got it cleaned off and went a couple more weeks with nothing. Then…. Again.

I had scheduled a lift with my ford dealer custom shop. I sent him a picture… showed them when I dropped off… and they couldn’t find anything either. Mind you, they even had the front end apart to put in the HRG lift.

haven’t seen it since, even after going offroad on a fairly rough trail. It was fine.

washed the car a day later and all was good.

couple more days…. It’s back. Front left.

ONLY the outer sidewall, some splashing up on the side. But there is no other sign in the wheel well, on any suspension parts, none in the engine compartment or anywhere except the outer sidewall and the bit of splashing.

Just can’t figure it out. If I’m not nuts, I’m getting there. This is the pic I sent to my ford shop. You may have to look close to see it. Cameras and all.

any thoughts would be useful.

I know right? We do have wildlife.

my neighbor was like “it looks like tire shine”. Said next April fools he may go around neighborhood spraying on tire shine…. But only one wheel LOL.

inknow. But I don’t use tire shine. It’s a brown oily feeling substance.

it’s on there now, and EVERYTHING is bone dry except the outer sidewall. All the way throughout the suspension. Nothing on the inner wheel either. Just the sidewall.

Humm, sounds like power steering fluid...... but I think the BS are electric.

Have to go check.

Edit: The BS is equipped with an electric power steering (EPS) system. There is no fluid reservoir to check or fill.

Is that what is on the wheel and tire? Could your caliper have a leak? I’m not really a car gal, so I’m not sure that is even a possibility. My husband was a diesel mechanic, but he passed 4 years ago. He always maintained the vehicles and could probably tell you immediately, but isn’t brake fluid about that color?

Isn’t brake fluid and power steering fluid the same or similar (dot 3 or whatever is being used now)?

Hmm. If it's really discolored and dry, I'm guessing you drove thru something that exacerbated tire bloom. Anyone near have a pool with a street level drain? (Salts and such can promote bloom)...
Keep us posted!

Seriously, smell it. Don’t put your nose on it just in case but get in close and smell it.
