But now hearing this noise . Sounds like metal scrapping when I first turn on and immediately after I turn it off.

if anyone has an idea I’d appreciate your thoughts thank you

I believe this is the parking brake actuator, uh, actuating. It's perfectly normal.

I can't tell which noise at start up. The most noticeable thing at shutoff is the throttle plate positioning itself and it makes the sorta slap noise. You can test Mark's parking brake idea with the engine off and see if that's the sound.

I’ll test w/the engine off - just put in park and then drive with car off?
Also there is a coughing sound after acceleration once I release pedal. I’m wondering if related (does not happen when car is in park and I do same thing). I attached a new video if u wouldn’t mind listening to that one too?!

If this is a brand-new car then you should take it back for service. It sounds like the recirculation valve is not working. The recirc valve opens when you close the throttle (take your foot off the pedal) to allow the pressurized air trapped between the turbocharger compressor and the throttle plate to recirculate back to the intake tract ahead of the compressor. If that valve malfunctions the pressurized air pushes back against the compressor blades. When that happens you'll hear that characteristic "chuffing" noise. Check out the video below.

May not help but my 2022 Badlands with the 2.0 makes a similar, possibly the same, scraping noise when starting up and shutting down. I don’t believe it’s the parking brake because it makes a higher pitched electronic sound (as it did with my 16 Fusion and 19 Escape).

My 2.0 has 34,000 miles on it and runs like new. Still smooth and quiet (in the cabin).

I think the scraping noise, if we’re referring to the same thing, is something normal happening during start up and shut down. I couldn’t tell you about the rest as we have different engines.

Thank you ! I did bring it into the dealer b/c its under warranty and they said they didn't find anything. But that has happened so many times with Mazda and I dug in more and they were wrong and had to fix. I just hope I don't have to go through what I went through with my Mazda to determine an issue while under warranty. So now I am gathering info from you smart folks to memorize before bringing it back.

thanks Adam, really good info. I almost bought the badlands but went with Outerbanks instead to save on gas. I love the sound of the 2.0 engine.

After listening to the video - We hear this noise on almost every Bronco Sport / Maverick that comes down to the shop. Ford Edge experiences the same thing.

Hi Thank you. I added another video of the gas pedal sound later so want to make sure which video you are referencing. - are you referring to the initial video I shot with the driver door open?

I was referring to the metal scrapping sound with the door open. I first noticed that sound when we developed our Maverick exhaust systems in 2022. The noise spooked me at first as well. However after working on a ton of Mavericks, Edges and now Bronco Sports that "scraping" noise is par for the course. I cant say exactly what it is but its sound to me a like a actuator going through a test cycle on setup.

The second video just sound like a muffled blow off / recirculation valve from the turbo dumping the built boost. Most Turbo fans love that noise but the manufactures are always trying to limit the sound as much as possible and try their best to muffle blow off from the Turbo.

I tried to find a quick video from when I have heard it - skip around to 12-13 seconds - You can here the sound briefly on startup.

There is this:

“whirring noise on startup from the rear”
RDU (Rear Drive Unit) differential shop manual shows there is an electric motor (two electric motors for Badlands) that disconnects the RDU (differential) from the driveshaft.

Hi there. I tested the parking brake when the car was off and the noise for parking brake is in the console area which is normal (to me). The noise on video is under the car what seems like under or just behind the driver's seat

@KK1 the last video definitely is just the turbo flutter from the recirculation valve closing and totally normal for the 1.5l its super pronounced vs. on the 2.0l. It will only do that when you are on and off the throttle quickly.
