I don't know how strong your mechanical skills are, but, did you try putting a meter to the harness and seeing if the assembly is getting power?

Is the harness connector same left and right? Plug the working unit in and try it again. Don't install it, just plug it in and have someone hold it.

What fuse in which fuse box did you determine operates the lamp? Power is supplied by a state change in the BCM. So if the BCM fuse failed, neither lamp should operate. I agree probably not a fuse, but then either the splice point to the left lamp, or the lead to the ground point might be pinched or broken.

Is your sidemarker (rear) lamp on that side also nonfunctional? It could be a transistor failure in the BCM that just isn't turning on that supply. Weird but possible.

FORScan is an OBD2 software scanner designed for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. It's a free open-source program that allows users to interact with their vehicle's computer, read and clear diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), and potentially change vehicle settings and parameters.

I know what it is, I've used it many times now. How would it help here in this situation?

If it was me I’d take a multimeter to each of the wires at the plug your tail light plugs into.
