Hello. First post. My name is Mike and I'm from San Antonio, TX. Took our days old FE to the Texas Gulf Coast to Padre Island National Sea Shore for some weekend beach camping. Added the big Yakima Megawarrior Rack the one Ford sales for over $500. Scored a unused one locally on Offer Up for $150 from a 4Runner take off! These Yakima baskets come standard on some 4Runners and you can find them on the secondary market for a good deal.
I am also running the 60" x 24" CURT Hitch Tray ($144 from Home Depot/Amazon sells it too). The tray folds up (see pic below). The one Ford sells is fixed and doesn't fold. That one direct from Ford dealer is $230.
Payload for this trip: 2 Adults, 2 kids (8 and 11 years) and our 50lb dog, Yakima basket (35lbs) + cargo (103 lbs) = 138 lbs (nearly 40 lbs over the recommended roof weight capacity - for those with moonroofs).
The Hitch Tray (70 lbs) + cargo (193 lbs by my scale) = 263lbs. That is +43 the Hitch tongue rating.
Bronco Sport sat lower in the back as expected. I was a little nervous going a combined 80ish lbs (Roof + Hitch) but it drove really smooth the whole way and in even in 4WD on both hard and soft sand. There was a noticeable alebeit slight sway if I was a little loose on the steering wheel with all that added weight but never felt unsafe. The Lane Keep system also came added extra security.
I averaged 22 MPG from San Antonio to our destination (2.5 hours). 24 MPG on the return leg (slightly less payload overall and perhaps a little windy in our favor).
The BS turned a lot of heads at the Beach. One Rubicon (done up nicely) passed by our camp, lowered his window and yelled "Nice Ride!".
Anyways glad to join this forum and thought I would contribute some nice pics and info.
