My friend has a Badlands (mine is on order) and she is trying to figure out if she can send text messages using voice commands over bluetooth. Is that possible?

I used to do that regularly in my 2016 F-150 XL. As a base model and earlier sync I thought it would also be easy to do so with the 2021 BS OBX. However it seems I can only send texts when using apple CarPlay. When just using sync more often than not I get a message saying “some features are disabled while driving for safety”. Not sure if I have settings or features set different or what but so far that’s what I’ve experienced.

Page 354 in the owners manual shows that this is possible. BTW, page 353 contains an 80’s themed Easter egg.

Yes it is. At least I have sent text messages via the vehicle.

Some links it seems say Sync 3 can only reply with one of the handful of canned messages via the screen. Weird. This is the first link I’ve found that shows how it can work. I just hold down the voice button on the steering wheel until Siri comes up, say text so & so, & start talking. Voice recognition isn’t great, they can certainly tell when I’m in the car & it’s half mangling my text, but it works. I presume it’s about the same with Android. Do other car brands implement this better?

According to multiple sources, you can listen and reply to text messages using Sync voice commands with an Android phone. You can listen to, but not reply to text messages using Sync voice commands with an iPhone. You cannot initiate a text message using either phone.

The document linked below contains a list of all Sync voice commands:

If you hold the voice button for several seconds, you get Siri to come up and can request a text be sent to anyone in your contact list. I can’t think of a reason Android phones wouldn’t work the same way.

You can say Hey Siri (if that’s your iPhone default) and say message Mark S (or whoever)

iPhone in the vehicle with or without carplay in use is a powerful tool
