This is irritating. I have been turning my recirculation switch on because we’ve had some bad wildfire smoke lately. It reverts to outside air intake after about 5 minutes even if the HVAC is set to manual.

Sometimes I miss the days of crank windows and fully manual climate controls.

Like my 2007 Ford F-150. And no carpet...rubber floor mat. Now if it were standard transmission.

This is not my post … it does offer a solution:
I think there is something else going on here besides setting the airflow to the windshield. The owner's manual states:

Note: Recirculated air could turn off or be
prevented from turning on in all air flow
modes
except maximum cooling to reduce
the risk of the windows fogging up.
This clearly says that directing airflow to the windshield does not prevent the HVAC system from controlling the recirc feature.

To OP, the HVAC system shuts off recirc to prevent the build up of humidity inside the car which can fog up the windows. It's probably not that much of an issue during the day, but fogged up windows at night can be dangerous. This is a safety feature, so I wouldn't expect Ford to change it any time soon.

On another note, all air going to the cabin goes first through the cabin air filter. If you are getting dust in the cabin from the HVAC system you should check your cabin air filter.

I have the same issue but it only happens in the morning... when I'm driving in the morning it turns off again and again but in the afternoon it stays on without a problem, so random

I guess it's a "feature". Kind of like the "feature" on my wife's VW Golf that covers half the backup camera image with a 5 second warning to watch your surroundings. So I end up using the old fashioned rear view mirror. Asinine.

My 2016 Subaru Forester had the same recirc operation so had to keep an eye on it to switch recirc back on.

Agreed. Too many nannies. Should also be able to permanently turn off lane keeping and off auto stop/start in vehicle settings.

Hey @FOMOCO .. have you tried the exact button settings depicted in the pic which the author claims will keep recirc on constant?
No, but what I have noticed is that when the A/C is on, the recirc doesn't seem to turn off automatically. So far.

I guess my point is, if I push a button, it should do its job, and I shouldn't have to guess about whether it will work or not. Otherwise I might as well go buy a much cheaper, older car that I can expect to work "most of the time".

Letting moisture build up in the air ducts is just asking for foul smelling, unhealthy mildew growth. It's a safety issue to turn off recirculation after just a few minutes.

P.S. Edit: My father taught me to turn off the AC or defroster a mile or two before reaching my destination for a similar reasons. Cold air ducts, and hot, moist air will cause condensation in the air ducts. Warm them up with the fan still blowing while you're still driving.
