Looking to get a handheld first, then at a mounted unit later down the road (trail?). Any recommendations for a decent one, and any units to avoid? Units you later regretted buying (or not buying)?

Thanks in advance!

I've watched a number of his vids. I think I'm leaning towards the Tidradio TD-H8.

If it weren’t ultimately a safety item, I could go the rest of my life away from ULF, LF, VHF, UHF, and HF. Too many years ruining my ears for Uncle Sugar and his crappy comm gear.

You didn't tell us what you want the radio for. I use Garmin Rinos for hunting. They are great because they have GPS and show the location of the person you're talking to. If you're just talking to your wife following in another vehicle, you may not need that.

Off-road use, mostly solo in the back country. Ability to hit repeaters is a high priority. The handheld is for initial use, will be installing a mobile unit down the road.
