"Don’t worry, there are plenty of options under $100,000."

Whew, I was thinking they might be expensive...

My first house -- a 3 BR single family in Rockville, MD -- cost $67,000, and that was in 1984 (a while ago, but not 1944). Anyway...

For decades (pre-internet) I subscribed to C&D; R&T; and Motor Trend. One thing they had in common was that they were rarely very critical of a vehicle. They would find something positive to say, or some way to sugar coat it's shortcomings.

"They're all beautiful but only one can win..." The comparison tests often had a high total number of possible points, and the results were invariably close -- say, 750 vs 744 vs 740. So they were picking a 'winner', without trashing the others. A reader could justify buying almost any vehicle. Which of course was the whole point -- to promote sales.

The car mags were/are useful, but a lot of reading between the lines was necessary.

This article isn't bad. There are only a few statements like:

"... it [the BS] has 17-inch wheels on 235/65 tires, better suited for off-road travel than the TrailSport's perhaps-too-big 18-inch wheels."

That's a pretty fine distinction. "It's a good thing it does not have those clown car *18"* wheels!"

And: "We’d recommend the Bronco over the Jeep for its superior ground clearance, payload, and on-road handling demeanor, but the Jeep will be just as capable — and you can start collecting rubber ducks."

So they say the Bronco is clearly preferable, but then 'soften' their recommendation by saying, "...but the Jeep will be just as capable..." Huh? Trying to keep Jeep happy (or less angry). After all, they are an advertiser.

Yep. And that was no special deal or 'fixer-upper.' Just a modest 3 BR, with no basement. It was considered a 'starter house'. I was able to cover the mortgage working 40 hours per week as a train control tech at Metro (the D.C. subway).

It was right after that when prices started to skyrocket. We sold it 5 years later for $122,000.

That's why I loved watching Top Gear. No advertisers. They would be critical of a car even for a joke. There was one time a manufacturer couldn't take criticism and took them to court (Teslarrrr)

CHEAP, don't think so.

Compact and capable, for sure.
