Hi Folks,

I’d like to ask for your opinions because this is my first time purchasing an extended warranty. Do you usually buy the extended warranty while the factory warranty is still active, or do you wait until the day the factory warranty expires to purchase it? Since the extended warranty starts counting from the first day of the factory warranty even if it’s purchased before the factory warranty expires, I’m wondering if I’m missing something or if anyone has any suggestions.

Thanks!

The only thing you are missing is the price increases Ford does (every year I think) that occur by waiting until the factory warranty is almost finished

In addition to avoiding price increases depending on the options you pick you can get first day and enhanced rental and Key service which would cover the cost of a lost key fob (around $700 at the dealer). These features are listed in the terms of service of your contract. Depending on where you purchased the ESP contract these items are included in the price of the contract unless you delete them or like at my local dealer I would have had to check the box to include them.
I am assuming that you have not purchased the ESP Plan yet so look carefully at the options and verify that they are included or must be added. The interior/exterior lighting is also a good option to take. A failed headlight assembly is $1,500 not including labor and is not covered under the ESP unless you make sure it is included

I did buy the extended warranty from my local Ford dealer and it was just before the 3 year time had expired to get a better price. I told the salesperson that I would bring the car back to this dealer for service and I got an extra discount. This is my first time with an extended warranty but with how many small recalls there have been I thought I should buy it. I finally hit the 36,000 mile limit for the original. The warranty is for 6 years or 100,000 miles. Taking it to a total of 9 years or 135,000 miles.

I'm in California as well. Can I ask what you paid for the warranty? Just looking for a point of reference.

Granger quit selling warranties in the Peoples Republic of California I think in 2023.

Another stupid regulation by the powers to be, eliminated competition.
Chances are it was the CA state auto dealers association that rammed that through, but the state gov't should not have allowed "campaign contributions" to influence their decision.

That's why most states do not allow factory direct to consumer sales. The auto dealers lobby is very powerful.

I bought my current warranty thru Granger before the "ban" per state regulations.

Had 2 previous Escapes with extended Ford warranties. Can't remember for sure but they were either thru Flood Ford in Rhode Island or Ziegler Ford in Michigan.

I believe the extended warranty is from the original date of sale. So your 6 year 100,000 mile extended warranty adds 3 years to the original warranty and expires at 6 years or 100,000 miles from date of original sale. If you are under the impression that it is an add on to the original warranty, you might want to check with your dealer and get a longer one if that is what you are after.

There is one primary reason to purchase an extended warranty -- piece of mind. Some folks will lose sleep over the possibility that their vehicle will have an expensive failure, out of warranty. That's understandable. They like knowing that their costs are limited to: 1) the cost of the warranty; 2) interest paid (and/or foregone); 3) deductibles -- even though they realize that they will most likely lose money on the deal.

The fact is, buying a warranty is "betting against the house". The underwriter has all of the failure rate and repair cost data. They are fully aware that certain parts are stupid expensive. They know, on average, how much repairs on any given make/model will cost, and they charge some healthy multiple of that amount.

By definition, there must be many more 'losers' than 'winners' for the underwriter to stay in business. Of course, we usually only hear from the winners, who are happy to post about how much money they saved. The losers generally stay silent. So the overall impression is that extended warranties are an excellent deal.

To the extent possible, people should consider being self-insured when possible. Most of us have no choice but to have homeowner's; health; and auto insurance because the potential loss is so great. For some people that might include a warranty for auto repairs, but for those that can afford to cover any repairs outside the factory warranty, that will be less expensive in most cases.

The terms of my service contract is that it adds 72 months and or 100,000 miles to my existing mileage. It does not terminate at 100,000 miles. Since I had 35,000 miles on the car at time of signing the contract goes out to 135,000 miles and or contract date of July 2030. As stated specifically in the contract.

Assuming the dealer sold you an original Ford ESP Plan they must have set the contract up as a used car contract as opposed to a new vehicle contract which is what is normally sold by the dealer within the first three years. That is the only way the contract period would be from the start of the contract. All new car ESP contracts start from the vehicle start date and can be sold as long as the vehicle is within the original warranty period. A dealer cannot change the start date of a new vehicle contract.
