I am new in this forum and couldn't find an answer to my question.
We have a new 2023 Ford Bronco Sport Badlands an we love it. It has the standard 225/65 R17 102H mud and snow tires on it.
I have an almost new set of spare 255/55R18 109H Winter tires on rims (from previous car). Since we live in Calgary, my question is whether the 255/55R18 109H Winter tires fit on the 2023 Bronco Sport Badlands? Optically they are almost the same size, so no issue there, but I wonder whether the change of the width from 225 to 255 is an issue?

The widest tire I've seen on a BS is 245. Discount Tire usually is a good source for info on which tires fit. Hopefully, they will chime in.

I think it should be fine. The diameter is less than the limit of 29.5", above which some rub in the front can happen with some compression and the wheel turned. The extra width should also be fine. There doesn't seem to be much issue with wider tires. Lots of 245 width tires have gone on (mine included) and there is nothing close to rubbing, so adding another 10mm to the width should be fine. I know that there is at least one person on here that has installed a 255 width tire.

Thanks for the info everyone! I contacted a tire place and here is what they had to say:

There are several differences between the two sets of tires/wheels. The difference in the 225 and 255 set of tires is 30mm in width. The VW tires are also 1 inch smaller in rim size. Another aspect you have to consider is the size of the ring of the hub that sits between the rim and your wheel bearing. The Bronco has a 63.4 size ring while the VW has a 71.5, therefore you would need a centering ring.

Any thoughts?

I would avoid any rim that requires a centering ring. Even the tiniest defect in these can place the wheel off center, which will almost certainly result in vibrations. Choose a wheel that's manufactured to the correct hub size for your car.

Thanks Mark, that's exactly the info I needed. I wasn't aware of wheels having different ring sizes. So, theoretically I could move the 255/55R18 109H winter tires onto new R18 rims with a 64.3 size ring? Still a bit concerned about the jump from 225 to 255 though, when I look at my Bronco Sport and take measurements it looks quite tight....

Interesting, thanks Seoden88! What are K02's? Do you mind sending a picture of your setup?

Also, there shouldn't be a difference between the 2022 and 2023 Bronco Sports Badlands with respect to this, right?

Generally speaking, if your intent is to improve off-road capability then the more sidewall the better. More sidewall will better protect the wheel from damage, especially at lower tire inflation. Ford offers an optional 235/65R17 off-road tire for the Badlands. The first number is tread width; the second is the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tread width. So, tread width for the OE offroad tire is 235 mm, and sidewall height is 235 X .65 = 152.75 mm. I would not purchase tires with a shorter sidewall than the OE tire if I planned to use them off-road.

I'm surprised that your wheel/tire person did not address the fact that the bolt pattern between VW and Ford is completely different. I did not think you were considering trying to use the same wheel.

While Mark is technically correct about a centering ring, I will say that a lot of cars use them. I will also say that I have had cars that used them for the last 20+ years. It is better to have a wheel with the right hub size, but a centering ring is a reasonable addition to the system.

You are absolutely right Eric! I am learning a lot here. The VW wheels have a 5x130 bolt pattern while the Bronco Sport has a 5x108 bolt pattern, so, I can't use these wheels. I wasn't even aware of the different 5 bolt patterns. They can even change by year. This solves the whole issue. I just sell the wheels with the tires on them and get a new set of winter tires that go on the original Bronco Sport Wheels. Thanks everyone for providing so much useful information. Great forum!

I've used wheels requiring centering rings in the past without issue. I've also used wheels with centering rings that DID have issues. I've never had vibration problems related to wheel centering with wheels that have the proper hub diameter. I'm not aware of any OEMs that use wheels with centering rings.
