I'm looking to purchase a crossbar set and Basket for extra cargo capability. Off brand sets appear to have similar specs and are significantly cheaper. Typically paying more will yield some level of product quality difference and I understand it's better to purchase one set that will last longer most of the time. For my usage though the crossbars will likely stay off most of the time and Basket will only be attached a few times a year when needed.

Does paying for Yakima, Thule, etc. make that much of a difference? Is it worth the extra cost?

Again this is "to each thier own". I have cheap cross bars (malone brand) that look nice but whistle and make wind noises at almost any speed on my VW. My Yakima crossbars aren't even noticeable with any noise on my BL. It's night and day with these 2 brands.

I considered an off brand. My Ford points brought the Thule crossbars too close to the off brands price to risk it.
