Warranty claims for this are routinely denied, even after escalation. Even more fun when they discover sunroofs aren't included in a glass coverage rider (if you have one), but under their comprehensive policy.

How do you know warranty claims for this are routinely denied?

Our '26 Badlands windshield stress cracked at 3 months. Ford approved warranty coverage within hours of taking it to the dealer.

What's even worse was when the sunroof shattered glass fell into my bong and I didn't realize it until I had to refill the bowl

The WSJ article you read is about nearly 2,800 NHTSA complaints since 2021 involving unexpectedly exploding/shattering sunroofs, across 17 manufacturers and more than 200 models. The earlier NHTSA investigation that began in 2013 accumulated more than 4,000 reports before NHTSA closed it in 2021.

Cause is usually road debris.

Compare to windshield cracks, failures from road debris that requires windshield replacement: industry estimates put U.S. replacements at roughly 14 million per year.

Called my insurance agent today and she verified that as long as the Sunroof was installed OEM it is 100% covered under my glass coverage.

We have had 2 vehicles with sunroofs (99 Explorer Sport & 08 Escape) & almost never used them. This is just another reason to not buy a vehicle with one; besides they like to leak after a while.
