The Honda Rescue Garage channel just posted a really neat offroad video pitting the badlands against a modified 1998 Explorer.

The "$500 vs $500/month" title is a bit clickbaity, but the video's really well done and there are some pretty darn cool bits to watch.

The nice thing about it is that this directly tests something that has what the sport deliberately sacrifices -- articulation and clearance -- vs the fancier drive system in the sport. The basic idea is take an old Explorer (solid rear axle, body on frame, traditional part time 4wd transfer case, and 4-low) that's been moderately modified, but still has open diffs and compare it to a lightly modified badlands (independent suspension, unibody, fancy AWD/full-time 4wd, no low range) on some really pretty tough trails.

Also major kudos to them for calling out the "pack it in, pack it out" part at the end!

great vid, legit.

technology has improved so much since 1998.
from what i see, up here, those old exploders are reliable to boot, but they are rust magnets.
if you can find one, get the 5.0 with awd. tanks, say no more. but also rust magnets.

still tho, great vid.

Spend some time on youtube, there are a lot of great off road videos with sports including hells revenge and hells gate. I have a video of one of these tests where a sport made it up a steep incline that a rubicon struggled with and barely made up.
