Nobody likes to see the areas of concern with respect to production year but information is better than heads in the sand.

35 year subscriber to CR here. Their info is not perfect but it is more objective than any other source

When CR slams a certain vehicle/product, owners get their feelings hurt and criticise CR. When their vehicle/product does well, they praise CR. It's always been that way.

In this case, keep in mind:

a) Those reliability ratings are for the 1.5L models -- at least, that's what they tested.
b) Reliability was initially 4/5 (very good), until the recalls.
c) Recalls can be seen in ratings (brakes, fuel system).
d) Recalls are different from random, unexpected failures in the middle of Nevada.

You wonder where the pull their data from. I'm sure there are generalizations, repair sources they may not reflect the majority of owners.

Even here you will see things get posted and most likely another here stating similar issues - but I think it may in many cases not the norm. Another thing about the forum, for example, is one of the reasons I stated viewing the forum is to see what issues were being posting. BUT, not every owner views or posts here.
As far as CR, not every issue or repair from the broad spectrum of ownership are most likely not inclusive. And results may be swayed due to those resources - even if well intentioned - to make the judgements......
Either way I have 2 BS's and we love 'em.

The red stuff:
Is brakes (whale mating song in reverse ),
Fuel system is the 1.5’s with leaking injectors issue in would also encompass the engine reliability issue.

CR claims their data comes from owner surveys.
We have received the CR survey in some years, completed it, and returned it. It was a very comprehensive [long] survey about ownership experience in all of the categories they monitor.

Over the years we have compared the ratings in the annual auto issues to our experience with our own vehicles. For the most part, the issues that CR has reported seem to match what we have noticed with our own cars more than not. There is some merit in the data they are reporting.

The overall reliability prediction they make incorporates data from prior years. If historically a vehicle is problematic, that will result in a less than stellar prediction for the latest model year. Based on their data, the '23 model already has 3 areas reported by owners that are showing to be worrisome. Body Hardware and Drive System weren't an issue for the previous 2 years; so new categories of potential concerns.

The data is a good basis for seeing potential issues with certain aspects, but not necessarily the end-all-be-all for making a purchase decision. Ultimately, buying what you like the best is always the best option :)

"...1.5 vibrates annoyingly at low revs..."?

I have not experienced this with my 1.5
It happens indiscriminately at the right speed. I have definitely noticed it, but I just speed up or slow down. It seems to be a very narrow band of RPM in a certain gear. I haven't delved too much into it because it doesn't bother me much.

Back when I was researching the BS, I recall reading -- from several different sources -- about the 1.5L engine being rough in certain rpm ranges.

That's another one of those subjects that's somewhat subjective. Compared to what -- a Lexus?

Bottom line, if the owner does not feel/notice it (or does but doesn't care) then it's not a problem.

I can guarantee one thing -- the 1.5L is silky smooth compared to the 2.0L in our '97 RAV4! That thing is rough. It always has been. No one would mistakenly hit the rev limiter in it -- I screams "I'm not happy" above about 3,500 rpm!
