LET ME START OFF SAYING, I'M A HUGE FORD GUY! OTHER THAN 2 VEHICLES, THAT I DIDN'T KEEP VERY LONG, HAVE ALWAYS PURCHASED AND DRIVEN FORDS. MY SON AND HIS WIFE PURCHASED A 2021 FORD BRONCO SPORT, I GUES THAT IS CONSIDERED A BASE MODEL? USED FROM A NORMALLY REPUTABLE DEALERSHIP HERE IN CHATTANOOGA. THE BRONCO HAD 80,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THEY PURCHASED IT 9 OR 10 MONTHS AGO. IT HAS BEEN PREFORMING FINE AND MY SON HAS KEPT UP WITH THE TYPICAL MAINTAINANCE ON IT, OIL CHANGES, ETC. A MONTH AGO THEY NOTICED THE BRONCO SHIFTING ROUGH AND IT JUST GOT WORSE UNTIL THE VEHICLE WOULD NO LONGER GO IN REVERSE WITH THE SELECTOR AND WAS SHIFTING FROM FIRST DIRECTLY INTO A HIGH OR O.D. GEAR PROVIDING ABSOLUTLY NO ACCELERATION. TOOK THE BRONCO TO MY FORD DEALERSHIP TO CHECK IT OUT, THEY REPORTED BACK THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED AND WOULD NEED REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $9800.00 ROUGHLY. THEY DID NOT, UNFORTUNATLY PURCHASE ANY KIND OF WARRANTY ON IT WHEN THEY BOUGHT IT. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THE FLUID HAD A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF METAL DEBRIS IN IT AND THEY WOULD NOT KNOW THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE UNTIL THEY PULLED IT AND DONE AN INSPECTION. ENDED UP TAKING IT TO A VERY REPUTABLE TRANSMISSION SHOP HERE IN TOWN THAT I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH BECAUSE THEY SAID THEY COULD DO IT FOR A LITTLE LESS. ENDED UP REBUILDING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. IT IS DRIVING GREAT NOW. $10,000.00 LATER. THE TECH AND OWNER THERE SAID AS HE WAS TEST DRIVING THE BRONCO FOR SEVERAL DAYS, WITH IT IN, I DONT KNOW IF IT IS 4WD HIGH OR AWD HIGH, NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE BRONCO, BUT THE SETTING THAT IT WOULD BE USED IN TO DRIVE ON THE NORMAL PAVEMENT, AS HE CUTS THE WHEEL SHARPLY, HE COULD FEEL THE SNAPPING OF THE REAR-END MUCH LIKE HAVING A 4WD TRUCK IN 4 HIGH OR 4 LOW ON DRY PAVEMENT. I HAD A FORD F-150 THAT WAS 4WD AND IT WOULD DO THAT IN 4WD WHEN IT WAS ON DRY PAVEMENT. HIS AND MY QUESTION, IS THIS NORMAL? IS THAT A RESULT OF THE AWD ON THE BRONCO? HIS CONCERN IS THAT SOMETHING IS NOT DISENGAGING AND THAT MAY HAVE BEEN OR COULD CAUSE AGAIN THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. SORRY THIS IS SO LONG BUT I WAS HOPING SOME OF YOU OTHER BRONCO OWNERS WOULD KNOW HOW TO ANSWER THIS. DON'T WANT TO RUIN THE TRANSMISSION AGAIN IF THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM.

thanks for reading!

The Sport does not have a traditional 4WD 2 speed transfer case like some trucks or Jeeps have, the system only has 4 wheel high so to speak. The RDU (rear drive unit) uses a clutch that is electronically controlled to provide traction to the rear wheel(s) as needed. Unfortunately according to your description the RDU may have a problem. Ford has a TSB for RDU chatter and noise that some people have experienced which is basically a fluid change and a different vent hose⁷. This has mitigated the issue for some but not all with the next step being replacement of the RDU.
You could take the Sport back to the dealer and have them diagnose the issue and then decide what path to take.

Thank You! I have read this on some other forums as well, It sounds like your diagnosis is correct. I will make an appt at the DealerShip. Thanks Much RSH!

Hey there. Can you please send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of the dealer you are currently working with? I would like to look further into this for you.

@PHILLIP BROCKWELL, you might want to edit your post to redact your personal info and VIN since this is a Public Forum (seen by all ... good or bad). If you hover over Ford Motor Company's avatar, you will see a "Start Conversation" button where you can post those things to them privately. Cheers!

Added in edit: Looks like he deleted his post.

Same here. 2021 Bronco Sport transmission failed. Please report to the NHTSA as they should issue a recall and ford with refund money spent on transmission
