I guess steal is perhaps the wrong word. I thought Oracle had a good case against Google, but grudgingly admit I can see why SCOTUS ruled in favor of Google (due to implications wirh other OSs like Linux. I still find myself siding with the minority dissents). Speaking of Linux, I also think...
What I mean by a "clean Android" OS is along the lines of what some phone users do by rooting their phones and installing a custom ROM that is stripped of all linkages to Google's servers by default (whereby any linkages are then only by user choice).
But I agree; any variant of Android like...
^^^ This ^^^ is almost certainly where it's headed based on a number of articles I've read concerning "adding revenue streams" (for both Google and vehicle manufacturers).
I would be less concerned about Android if it was a bare bones (i.e., no Google) variant. But it won't be b/c it will...
"Permanently" mount a NOCO Genius 2D. I have them on ALL my new(ish) Ford's. Plugged in as soon as I get home. Not one issue with batteries since. Previously would get a 35% or so SOC if the vehicle hadn't been used for a week.
Potentially lousy batteries couples to systems that never turn off...
Absolutely agree now that USB is the way to go. For Sync 3....
Because, with Sync 4 you don't have the option; all delivered via WiFi; no USB option shows on tne updates page. So I'm trying to see if there are ways around that for my third Ford.
Interesting you note that.
As I've written in several posts above I just updated my two Fords. The second vehicle DID download the map update over WiFi and install, but something seemed off (not fully or correctly installed, which is why I went the USB route).
The Bronco Sport tried several...
Wanted to add that I did the map update on one vehicle following Ford's instruction to have the engine running. What a waste of gas.
So for the second vehicle map update, I tried to do it w/o starting the engine. I turned the key to "accessory" and installed w/o ever starting the engine until...
2023
Great instructions in Post 1, btw.
And I do now see what you mean about the number of years one gets. The one download is for this year's. So I guess we'll see next year if the complimentary downloads is three. Or one. Or something else.
Great thread; I found it HUGELY helpful.
The Ford website never updated via the WiFi route, so I ran the update via the USB route on both vehicles. Generated and uploaded the .xml file. .xml files accepted, all good. Thank you, everyone in this thread for the help.
P.S. One vehicle updated the map to NA 2 23 via WiFi. The other I'm...
Will give it another shot. I have checked for updates at the head unit several times. Each time it tells me I'm up-to-date at the vehicle. But online it still shows as needing the update. Maybe just a time cycle thing.
Thanks!
Thank you. Yes, the files are somewhat different. So while I wasn't thrilled that I had to download 13GB twice (12GB+ for the maps and almost 1GB for Sync23188) it was the safer bet.
Now the next issue is that while I was downloading files for the the USB solution both vehicles updated over...
Pardon me for a dumb question, but both of my 2023 Fords require the same Sync 23188 and current map updates. Can I use one download set (Sync file and map license & file) for both or do I have to download one set of files for one and again for the second.
Also, the website told me the days of...
Not a fan. Looks like Ford dropped a tablet into a slot.
So why not just do that? Do a deal with Samsung or Apple or Microsoft so that you could drop in an iPad or Tab Sx or a Surface? Load it with a Ford app that activates when docked.
So if you're gonna add something that looks out of place...
FWIW I had a similar issue using a MP3-filled USB stick on my 2012 F-150. Worked great forever and then, no. Reformatted the stick, still no. Changed to a different stick of the same capacity and it worked fine. The only thing I could come up with was that Sync registered the device ID and when...
NOCO Genius 2D. I went with the project as done by @MAGPLM. Looks great. Will update with link to his project as soon as I find it.

Loved his approach so much that I did...
For additional info, I posted the Ford instructions here:

I thought the Ford instructions/procedure were/was "ridiculously complicated," but your take makes it seem easy. Hmm, maybe I will...
Yup, the coupon helps. So I took a chance. I've attached the official Ford procedure in case anyone's interested. Ridiculously complicated. I'm going to use the method the OP used (though, hopefully, without any front panel damage).
