The rubber strip I got had two lines of adhesive; one went on the windshield and the other the roof. As you can see in my pic, I didn't get it completely straight but it was close enough. I wouldn't worry about putting it on. You can always peel it back off.

I wouldn't mind a skid plate where the current protection is that fabric one. I tore mine in Moab this last summer. Also took a good hit to the plate covering the gas tank but it did its job.
