Ford Bronco Sport sales totaled 5,526 SUVs in February 2021 (13,576 YTD). Customers love the rugged styling and the expressive retro- grade design. Bronco Sport is bringing in a more active lifestyle customer, with 56 percent of Bronco Sport customers opting for the trailer-tow package for the mounting of accessories and towing ATVs, motorcycles and campers.

Ford brand SUVs had their best February retail sales in 20 years, thanks to Bronco Sport and Mustang Mach-E. Both SUVs are turning quickly, with days-to-turn on dealer lots at just 13 days for Bronco Sport and only four days with Mach-E. Combined sales of Mustang Mach-E and Bronco Sport are up 11.8 percent.

Like January, Ford retail sales outperformed the industry again. Fordā€™s estimated retail share in February totaled 12.0 percent, compared to 11.7 percent last year. Share gains came from trucks and new product offerings of Bronco Sport and the fully electric Mustang Mach-E.

I am confused. How does 10% drop from last year = best SUV sales in 20 years?
I was confused at first, but I think I figured it out. So the increase is in market share. All car sales are down this year, but the portion of them that are Fordā€™s is up. Last year 11.7% of SUVs sold were Ford. This year itā€™s 12%. So Iā€™m assuming they have never had 12% of the SUV market before in February.

F-150 is still king of the heap, almost by itself (really "F-series") outselling all Ford SUVs combined. Lots of other interesting numbers here: they almost might just give up on cars -- except Mustang -- and the Lincoln brand. Escape, and Explorer -- still king of the SUVs -- handily outselling almost everything else but the F-series. Escape is a winner, Ford was right to differentiate between it and the Bronco Sport. Escape is going the way of the Honda Pilot and Passport in terms of crossover/minivanesque design language, and people seem to like that roadworthy design and the comfort and utility that comes with it. I suspect the Sport will always fill a different niche, for a smaller, lightweight, less expensive than some, more rugged on/off-road vehicle. As such I don't believe it will ever catch up in broadest appeal, or sales to the Explorer, or even the Escape -- and I'm fine with that as long as it's popular ENOUGH to catch on so it will evolve over time and I can buy my 2nd or 3rd generation Sport, and still get parts for the first one!
