BS OB
Hi all, I've been lurking for a bit so this is my first post since my wife and I took delivery of our BS OB within the last month. I'm posting this for informational purposes. Moderators please move thread as needed.

The question: Due to supply chain issues experienced in 2021, is there an aftermarket moonroof option and can it be installed into the BS?

Answer: Yes.

I am speaking from first hand experience with my 2021 BS OB, in Cactus Grey. You'll just need to find the right shop or dealer. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on cost.

EDIT (25 Jan): The dealer is Ted Britt Ford of Fairfax (Virginia). A+ all around and taking good care of us. I'm seriously considering getting a Big Bronco in a couple years with full intention giving them repeat business.

Backstory: We arrived at the dealer after getting the call the vehicle had been delivered after the familiar long waiting period. We checked it out before they even had all the protective plastic removed from shipping. With great excitement we sat down and finished all the sales paperwork. We were literally about to drive away and my wife noticed the vehicle did not have the moonroof. Tired, hungry, and cold we discussed the concern with our salesman and sales manager. We agreed it was mixup/miscommunication and they offered to make it right. We negotiated an ESP and maintenance, plus a couple other items so maybe they were more willing to work with us due to us laying out more money. And we gave them our business, instead of another dealer who had a BS on order for us but wouldn't promise not to add additional markup. Plus, the dealer we went with stated they'd already been installing moonroofs on recent deliveries. I took them at their word and trusted we would not be the guinea pigs.

A few days after delivery, we returned the vehicle for install. Four days later, we picked it up with an installed power moonroof. The dealer is offering warranty on it like any other part on the new vehicle. We negotiated an ESP very close to what is offered by Flood, so we'll have plenty of coverage for years to come covered by any Ford dealer. I've owned many vehicles with moonroofs, and a couple convertibles (Jeep TJ and MX5) over the years. None of these leaked through the roof. Door seals were only ever a problem, and rare occurrence at that.

From my understanding, installation was not performed by the regular service gals/guys, it was contracted out to a local company.

The installation looks factory, minus the interior button and handle for the headliner panel (black with chrome accents). I'm going to investigate the biege option to blend in better. The model they installed is the Webasto Hollandia 700 Comfort. This brand is most likely OEM for some manufacturers; whether they are for Ford or not, I have no idea.

Pictures attached.

Dude, that is super gutsy on an aftermarket job that can go sideways terribly. Very nice work!

Nice! Good option for sure if youā€™re really wanting a moonroof & your vehicle isnā€™t equipped. Thatā€™s the one option I specifically skipped on my order & Iā€™m hardly the guy that wants to go back to the crank window days for ā€˜less to go wrongā€™. After a couple threads debating whether the option was worth it to order or not, itā€™s neat to see someone so dedicated to it, to pursue an aftermarket option.

I would imagine headliner above back seat was lowered to allow roof panel to slide inside instead of above roof like factory moon roof.

Thanks for the comments! Hoping it'll help others. I was somewhat nervous about it but at the end of the day it'd work out one way or another. Probably not for the faint of heart DIY'er.

I'll second that. You wanted that moonroof really bad to let them cut on your brand new vehicle.

I should clarify. It was the wife that wanted it. She primary driver. Personally, I was ready to accept and leave to get a late dinner.

I did not look to closely or take measurements, but would tend to agree.

I think I've seen people talking about factory may bump into roof rails. When the weather gets better I'll put my level across it to check clearance. We plan to eventually get cross bars for our Yakima cargo carrier.

This has been done for years. My brother own an auto glass shop for nearly 50 years. Used to put moon roofs in old cars way before it was a thing. His didnā€™t open. He had a 66 Pontiac that was his first victim. After that, everyone wanted them. Was actually pretty easy if you knew what you were doing. Plenty of places that used to do it in the ā€˜80s. Kind of like auto stereo places, not as many now but still ones out there.

Looks real nice and Iā€™m glad it worked out as well as it did. My BS OB is here next week and I wanted a sunroof but I am not sure I trust my local places that much.

Yup. It's not like cutting the rear bumper cover for the hitch. You screw up you buy a new bumper, easy. (Source: I messed up my wife's Escape bumper adding trailer hitch)

Maybe so, but I would definitely think twice about ANYONE cutting the headliner and roof regardless of how reputable they were.

I kind of recall that being a thing actually now, thanks for the reminder. But that was back when they were just glass panels that might flip open. I didnā€™t realize this was still a thing with the new power opening ones.

I canā€™t understand why ours installed at factory go on the outside of the roof ? They (ford) need to take notes on that installation .
